As it is with humans, horses are all individuals. Certain horses can react to certain feeds and as owners may perceive that these feeds cause their horse to “hot up” or are even allergic/sensitive to the feed. This feeling can be amplified further when we see 'trends' come and go on social media - we've probably all been there at some point over something, even if we don't care to admit it.
An alternative explanation is that these feeds may actually be benefiting the horse and are feeling much better in themselves with their diet more balanced. A mal-nourished horse will be quieter and more subdued than a well-nourished horse. This maybe that the horse just is not getting enough to eat, or the diet is imbalanced, with sufficient calories but lacking good, appropriate nutrition.
If the horse is actually allergic to, or intolerant of a certain feed, the reaction will be very quick – hours or less. Improving the quality of the diet will deliver an effect in a matter of days and will reap long term benefits.
A feel-good factor can arise, for instance, when linseed is added to the diet. Many equine diets are low in essential omega 3, which is anti-inflammatory. Cereals, and pulses such as soya, contain oils high in omega 6 which is pro-inflammatory. Correcting this imbalance with high omega 3 linseed will certainly make a horse feel better!
Starchy feeds are not easily digested and may leave the horse feeling mildly uncomfortable, a bit grumpy and erratic in behaviour. Switching to forage feeds which are much more easily digested will result in a happier, more comfortable and willing horse.
