Soaking Simple System Horse Feeds - FAQs

12 December 2024

At Simple System we recommend soaking all of our pelleted forages. Here are our most frequently asked questions on the topic...

Q. How long should my horse's feed take to soak?
A. We recommend soaking all of our Simple System pellets until they are free from hard lumps. Soaking times vary for each product so, for ease, we suggest soaking one feed ahead - for the breakfast feed soak the evening before, and for the evening feed, soak at breakfast time.

Q. Why should I soak my horse's feed?
A. There are many reasons why offering soaked feeds is beneficial for your horse. The main reasons being to increase hydration and to minimise the risk of choke. Soaked feeds are also ideal for horses with poor dentition. You can read more in our article here ⤵

Q. Can I make soaking faster?
A. Yes! Using hot or warm water is an easy way to speed up soaking on a very cold day - or if you're in a hurry.

Q. My horse doesn't enjoy a wet feed - what should I do?
A. The consistency of our soaked feeds can be altered to one your horse enjoys. It can be fed as a 'dry' crumble or even as a soup, depending on what they prefer. Simply adjust the amount of water as required and ensure no hard lumps remain before offering to your horse.

Q. My feed is taking longer than usual to soak - why?
A. It is perfectly normal for pelleted feeds to soak at different rates throughout the year. In winter, pellets typically take significantly longer to soak as the ambient temperature is much lower, particularly at night, so not only is the tap water colder but the pellets themselves are also much colder. You can speed up soaking times by using warm water and/or insulating your buckets and feed bins. Natural variations in the crop can also alter soaking times.
