Are grass nuts and grass pellets the same thing?

Yes. Grass nuts, grass pellets and grass cubes all refer to dried grass compressed into pellet form. Ours are pure grass with no binders, fillers or added sugars.

Should grass pellets be soaked before feeding?

Any pelleted feed carries a risk of choke, so we strongly recommend soaking grass pellets until free from lumps - use around 2.5 times their volume of water. HayCare is designed to soak especially quickly. Alternatively, mix with a Simple System chop and dampen well.

How much grass pellets should I feed my horse?

As a guide, start with 100g per 100kg of bodyweight per day - 500g for a 500kg horse - and increase according to workload and condition, up to a maximum of 5kg per day. Introduce any new feed gradually over a week.

Can I feed grass pellets to my horse in winter?

Yes - this is when they are most valuable. Grass pellets replace the nutrition lost when winter grazing dies back, helping horses hold condition through the colder months, and they can be fed alongside hay or as part of a partial hay replacement.

Are grass pellets low in sugar and starch?

Grass is naturally free from added sugar, and our grass feeds are pure dried grass with no molasses. Sugar levels vary with the grass and cut: mature-harvested Timothy grass, as used in HayCare, is naturally lower in sugar, while spring-cut grass is richer. Analysis figures are published on every product page, so good doers and horses requiring lower sugar and starch can be matched to the right feed.

Can grass nuts help a horse gain weight?

Grass nuts are a useful conditioning feed: Red Bag Grass Pellets provide the higher protein and energy of spring grass, ideal for horses that need to build or hold condition. Older horses and poor doers often do well with soaked grass pellets, which are easy to chew and digest.
