How we feed and manage young, growing horses can have a lasting impact on their longevity and temperament.
Feeding young horses high quality forages ensures steady growth and development, greatly reducing the risk of developmental disorders that are now quite often associated with feeding starchy, cereal-based feeds from an early age.
Many studies have also found that forage fed youngsters are more inquisitive and braver but easier to handle with a lower incidence of stereotypies.
Choosing forages with a high quality protein content such as lucerne or sainfoin will adequately support their musculoskeletal development whilst supporting digestion and keeping sugar and starch levels low. More mature cuts of these forages will maintain appropriate weight and condition in better doing breeds whilst still aiding muscle development and growth.
Where possible, weaning should be delayed until they are at least 7-8months old to allow them to develop their own robust immune system before leaving their dam. Eclipse Recovery can be used to support any 'under the weather' foals who react adversely to early worming, vaccinations or dietary changes.
