Did you watch Countryfile this week? It was great to see sainfoin feature, alongside the benefits of feeding a forage diet to horses (and polo ponies!).
Premium forage alternative to lucerne and grass, rich in natural
minerals and trace elements.
Sainfoin is a premium forage alternative to lucerne and grass. Known as 'healthy hay', Sainfoin has long been recognised for its many benefits.
Our Sainfoin is rich in natural minerals and trace elements. They are a good source of condensed tannins, which aid digestion of protein. Sainfoin is suitable for all horses, and can be very beneficial when fed with hay and grass as a nutritious alternative and to add a variety of flavour.
As with any new feed, introduce gradually over a week.
Sainfoin Pellets are ideally fed soaked. If appropriate, feed singly as treats or mixed with twice their volume of soaked PuraBeet or twice their volume of chop and well dampened. Use as part of the forage ration or in addition.
Start with 100g per 100kg of bodyweight per day, increase as required up to a maximum of 5kg per day. For example, for a 500kg horse start with 500g per day (dry weight, before soaking) and increase as required.
Feed according to requirement & condition.
A level Stubbs bowl scoop = 1.5kg (dry weight) approximately
We do not add vitamins as the forages themselves have them naturally occurring, often in their precursor form. We have averaged the analysis of different batches for this product to provide the following vitamin & mineral figures.
We are very keen to promote natural feeding of our native Highlands as they are not built to cope with rich higher sugar diets that you see in many other feeds. We also needed a straightforward and economical diet that could be used for our mares, stallions, foals and youngstock that would promote muscle development and bone growth without adding excess fat or fizz. With Simple System we have found exactly that.Carolyn Ashcroft, Cheshire
I’m proud to say that Simple System have been part of our team for over 20 years, in our quest to provide our horses with the most natural life we can.
Jasper and Sweep were no doubt, the beginning of our natural journey, bare foot, no rugs, bitless, freedom of movement and making our own hay. Over the years Simple System has always been there when we needed feeding advice for individual horses and also helping us to manage our land with Natural Grazing Mix and Equine Calcified Plus (now Natural Paddock Recovery).Mrs Lindsey Bootes

When the temperature decreases horses need more calories to keep warm so it is important to ensure our horses have enough food to sustain them.
