We are celebrating Organic September at Simple System Horse Feeds. We are delighted to announce that we are expanding our range of organic horse feeds and our Lucie Stalks are now certified organic. We have also partnered with The Organic Hamper Company to run an exciting competition – the lucky winner will receive a luxury organic hamper for them and 3 bales of Organic Lucie Stalks for their horse! Head over to our Facebook page to enter. By developing a range of organic feeds, we are promoting lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable management of the land and natural environment. Healthier horses and a healthier planet! All of Simple System Horse Feeds are free from GM ingredients, free from preservatives and additives, but we go that extra mile to grow a range of feeds organically – meaning we can bring you certified organic products. Feeds you can trust Our organic feeds are registered with the Soil Association. All organic farms and companies are inspected at least once a year and the standards for organic food are laid down in European law. You can be sure that organic feed comes from trusted sources. Fewer Pesticides Almost 300 pesticides can be routinely used in non-organic farming and are often present in non-organic feed. Organic farming standards, on the other hand, don't allow any synthetic pesticides and absolutely no herbicides such as Glyphosate. Organic farmers are permitted to use just 15 pesticides, derived from natural ingredients including citronella and clove oil, but only under very restricted circumstances. No artificial chemical fertilisers Artificial chemical fertilisers are prohibited – instead organic farmers develop a healthy, fertile soil by growing and rotating a mixture of crops, adding organic matter such as compost or manure and using clover to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. No Genetically Modified (GM) ingredients or preservatives GM ingredients are banned under organic standards. Better for wildlife Organic farms are havens for wildlife and provide homes for bees, birds and butterflies – there is up to 50% more wildlife on organic farms. Better for the planet Organic means working with nature, not against it. No system of farming does more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, or protect natural resources like fresh water and healthy soils. Our range of organic feeds include our Organic Lucie Pellets, Organic Lucie Stalks, Organic Cider Vinegar and our Salt Lick Tub is approved for use in organic systems. Although it is traditional to wean at 6 months, this is actually too early. The foal’s important gut microbes are not fully up and running until the foal is 7.5 months old.
