New arrivals!

08 May 2014

Well we have had two new arrivals at the stud early in May, both from our homebred stallion Sherlock’s Seren Dreamer.  The first was a minimally marked filly out of our 2013 CHAPS championship broodmare champion mare Loobie Lou, who was also 1st res supreme champion veteran and 1st reserve in the overall in-hand supreme.  We have had nothing but colts from this mare and at 18yr old we had started to think she would never give us a filly.  Well this year being her last foal she gave in and we have a filly! She is a super smart little girl and is full sister to our successful 2012 and 2013 colts that have both won at national level.  We plan to keep her to show and may take her for the prestigious CHAPS foal futurity and British National Foal Show so keep an eye out for updates!

The second foal was out of our Welsh D mare Brynhedydd Gwenllian. This was a black filly and full sister to the multi-regional supreme champion, youngstock evaluation champion and 2013 CHAPS championship “yearling of the year” Sherlock’s Heaven Sent.  She will be for sale when weaned.  We still have 4 more mares to foal but hope to have a few nights sleep before the next mare foals, although she is now past her due date so this may not happen!

We are very lucky to have good grazing so don't have to feed the mares all year round but when they come in I like to feed them a mix of LucieNuts (for the good doers) and Red Bag Grass Pellets. You only need to look at the picture of Loobie Lou (bay and white mare) to see that with good grass and Simple System feeds she is getting everything she needs to keep her and the foal in top condition.

We have still not got into the full swing of showing yet but this week it all kicks off with Windsor! Love the show and it always marks the start of the showing season for me.  We did venture out to a BD event this week where Sherlock’s Seren Dreamer won his prelim, with Brickell Mr Pickwick coming second and winning another prelim test. Dressage is a fabulous way of helping to get them ready for the show ring!

Feeding the broodmare and foal

''Feed the mare to feed the foal'' - wise words from many an experienced breeder. With little grass due to the dry weather, grazing can be topped up in the feed bowl.
