Can horses cope with sudden cold weather?
Horses can survive and even thrive in what we consider to be very inhospitable conditions, but they do need plenty of feed to fuel them and keep them warm.
As it gets colder, horses’ appetites increase and with less grass available, this means more work and more expense for us. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an economical, bulky, nutritious feed we could fill them up with?
PuraBeet is a totally unmolassed, pelleted beet pulp that swells up to 6 times its original volume, so gives your horse plenty of bulk to munch through, is hydrated so he is eating water and is an excellent source of fermentable fibre, which helps to keep the vital gut microbes healthy and supplying your horse with important free fatty acids for slow burn energy and stamina, not silly, fizzy energy.
Measure your PuraBeet when it is dry; you can use anything up to 0.5% of your horse’s correct weight – that’s an impressive 2.5kg per day for a 500kg horse. Add 5 times this amount of water and a few hours later, a massive feed! If you use hot water, it will be much quicker. This can be used to bulk out your normal feed or in greater amounts to replace hay or haylage. Once soaked up, it has a good texture, with actual pieces of re-constituted beet, not a mush. PuraBeet is suitable for all types of horses and ponies and due to its ultra-low natural sugar content and can be fed to horses sensitive to sugars for whatever reason.
PuraBeet is a good source of minerals and trace elements, especially Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Cobalt and Selenium. It does not have a lot of protein but is a good source of the amino acid, Lysine. It also has branch-chain amino acids, believed to benefit the liver. As beet pulp is not a good source of natural vitamins we suggest it is fed in combination with plenty of green food such as good grazing, our Red Bag Grass Pellets or Blue Bag Grass Pellets, Lucie®Nuts or Organic Lucie®Pellets. These will all supply a natural source of Vitamin E and carotene for Vitamin A. Total Eclipse is the perfect balancer to complement PuraBeet.
