Sainfoin Fibre Pellets

An important update for Sainfoin Fibre Pellet customers...

14 November 2024

Since 2016 we have been working to bring back Sainfoin, a valuable forage, from near extinction.

Sainfoin's benefits were widely known but the details of its specific requirements, growth patterns and nutritional analysis were unknown. Over the past 8 years we have worked with our growers to produce sainfoin, in different conditions, developing a fantastic range of sainfoin feeds for your horses.

Sainfoin Fibre Pellets were harvested during particularly hot, dry spells through 2022 and 2023. Deep rooting sainfoin survived well, with overall lower nutrition, making a healthy, low-calorie feed.

In 2024, we've established much more consistency between cuts and yield across the growing season. The entirety of our harvested sainfoin crop is now in specification for medium energy Sainfoin Pellets, rather than the lower feed value Sainfoin Fibre Pellets. As a result, Sainfoin Fibre Pellets will now be discontinued.

Improved consistency gives our growers the confidence to increase the acreage dedicated to sainfoin production, focusing on medium energy Sainfoin Pellets and chopped sainfoin.

For the majority of horses Sainfoin Pellets are a suitable alternative - with many customers having already made the nutritional 'switch up' in preparation for the demands of winter.

For those with very good doers, metabolic issues or prone to laminitis, Lucie Fibre Cubes are an ideal replacement. A further alternative is to add PuraBeet to Sainfoin Pellets to reduce the calorie density in the feed bowl. Watch our video below to learn more.

When should I wean my foal?

Although it is traditional to wean at 6 months, this is actually too early. The foal’s important gut microbes are not fully up and running until the foal is 7.5 months old.
