Feed for horses prone to sand colic

Dry ground, short grazing and an increased risk of sand colic

08 May 2025

Independant equine vet, Dr Anna Michelle (Shelley) Cook, of Little Rock Equine Vets in Staffordshire, tells us more about sand colic in horses, ponies and donkeys, and importantly, how feeding can help prevent it.

When the ground is dry and grazing is short, Shelley recommends feeding ample forage in the field such as hay or haylage, ideally off the ground or on top of rubber matting. She also strongly suggests feeding a beetpulp based feed or mash, such as Simple System's PuraBeet, alongside Instant Linseed. Both feeds help to form a mucoidal coating to aid the passage of sand through the gut.
