Blackberry coats as Autumn approaches

21 August 2025

With all the warm and dry weather we have had, it is hard to remember that we are fast approaching autumn. The horses are getting their “blackberry” coats.

Short summer hair is shedding and they are getting a more matte look about them. The demands of making a new winter coat increase their requirements for protein, so now is a good time to ensure horses are getting a sufficiently nutritious diet.

Add a little extra protein with lucerne or sainfoin feeds, or consider upgrading to higher nutrient grass. Upping the levels of essential omega 3 with Instant Linseed will ensure a glossy winter coat, fit for purpose of warmth and water repelling.

If you'd like to discuss your horse's individual requirements, contact the Feed Line on 01728 604 008, or complete our advice request form.
