Notes from BEVA Congress 2025

We manned a trade stand and received some wonderful feedback about using Simple System in a clinical setting as well as all for your typical day-to-day feeding conundrums: older horses, those with poor dentition, metabolic horses and those prone to itching. Our HayCare Care Packs were very well received, with a good number of 'new to us' vets requesting packs for both ambulatory use and in the hospital setting. We also had many discussions about MetaSlim for horses pone to laminitis, and about MalleMash for those with dry or itchy skin.

 

As always, there was wealth of information to be gained from attending the lectures. A broad range of topics was covered and some of our highlights were; research on insulin sensitivity and primary energy source in trained horses, the use of track systems and welfare considerations, an update on Equine Grass Sickness research and perioperative feeding in the context of reducing colic risk.

 

One recurrent and very relevant theme throughout Congress, was the ongoing issue of equine obesity with a focus on encouraging behaviour changes to tackle this very relevant issue. Whilst aware of the problem, we as owners may not always know how best to go about resolving it or, tend to let our horses off for being a bit on the large size due to their breed or use. We also tend to be good at recognising obesity in other's horses, but not necessarily in our own.
